  തിരിഞ്ഞു നോക്കുമ്പോൾ ജീവിതത്തിൽ എത്ര പേരോട് നന്ദി പറഞ്ഞാൽ മതിയാവും എന്ന് അറിയില്ല. ഓരോ വാക്കുകളും നെഞ്ചിൽ തറച്ചു കയറുന്നത് പോലെ തോന്നി. കരയാൻ തോന്നി, ആരോടൊക്കെയോ നന്ദി പറയാൻ തോന്നി. ആർത്തി തോന്നി, കൂടുതൽ വായിക്കാൻ തോന്നി.

  "ചുറ്റും വെള്ളം പൊങ്ങുന്നു എന്നു കണ്ടാൽ, നീന്തൽ വശമില്ല എന്നറിയാവുന്ന നീ പകച്ചു പേടിച്ച് അലമുറയിടരുത്. ആ വെള്ളപ്പാച്ചിലിൽ അവിടവിടെ പൊങ്ങിക്കിടക്കുന്ന മരക്കഷണങ്ങളിൽപിടിച്ചുകയറി വെള്ളത്തിലങ്ങ് പൊങ്ങിക്കിടക്കണം. എന്നിട്ട് ഓളത്തിനൊപ്പം ഒഴുകുന്ന ശിഖരങ്ങൾ കാട്ടുവള്ളികളിൽ ചേർത്തുവെച്ചു കെട്ടി ഒരു ചങ്ങാടമുണ്ടാക്കണം. കരപറ്റിക്കഴിയുമ്പോഴുണ്ടാകുന്ന ആ സന്തോഷമായിരിക്കണം തുഴഞ്ഞുനീങ്ങുമ്പോൾ നിന്റെ മനസ്സിൽ. തീരമെത്തിക്കഴിയുമ്പോൾ മറ്റാർക്കെങ്കിലും ഉപകരിക്കാനായി ആ ചങ്ങാടം വെള്ളത്തിലേക്ക് തള്ളിവിടണം.

  ഞങ്ങൾ വളരുന്നതനുസരിച്ച് വിശപ്പിന്റെ വികൃതികളും കൂടിവന്നു. അമ്മയുടെ കൂലിപ്പണിയും എരുമവളർത്തലുമൊന്നും ഞങ്ങൾ നാലു മക്കളെ വളർത്താൻ മതിയാകുമായിരുന്നില്ല. ഏറ്റവും വിശപ്പ് എനിക്കായിരുന്നു. എത്ര കഴിച്ചാലും വിശപ്പ് അടങ്ങാതിരുന്ന എനിക്ക് അമ്മ എന്നും കൂടുതൽ ചോറ് വിളമ്പുമായിരുന്നു.
